- The dry interior hindered the settlement of inland areas. Even today the vast majority of Australia's population lives close to the coast. The Blue Mountains west of sydney were considered impenetrable until Lawson and some other guy found a way through. This opened up farm land to the west. Tasmania was considered a good spot for a penal colony because of its remoteness. The capital, Canberra, was established because Melbourne and Sydney were fighting over who would be the capital. Therefore australias capital is an ugly city in an ugly part of Australia.
